By Rubén Morales Iglesias: For the first time in umpteenth years Belize is playing a football competition without any playoffs like they do in Europe. Traditionally, Belizean sports, not only football, have preferred to the playoffs format as they do in the United States. Pressed for time, however, the Football Federation of Belize, embattled with the Premier League of Belize and pushed by FIFA and CONCACAF to come up with a national champion, decided to set up a Top League which is now finishing a double round-robin tournament.
Verdes crowned themselves champions with two games to spare. So, last weekend’s games and this coming weekend fixtures are just for the records. The FBB as an official body under FIFA cannot do away with the games as is the case in many competitions held here. Once a winner is declared, teams tend to just fall off the wayside.

Good thing that’s not the case. Plus, it also allows the teams to give some playing time to those players who have been warming the bench throughout the season.

So, this weekend, expect lineups that might not be the full-powered ones the teams used for previous games. Then again, you never know. The San Pedro Pirates, with 14 points, would need to beat Verdes by a ton-load of goals because that is the only way they could surpass second-place Altitude, who have 17 points, would need for Altitude to lose, and the Pirates to beat Verdes by at least six goals. But by the time the Pirates face off with the champs, Altitude would already have played, and if Altitude just draw, San Pedro could beat Verdes by a million goals and would still not be able to wrestle away second place from the southern club.

Whichever way the Altitude game goes, San Pedro beating Verdes is a very hard task if not impossible, considering Verdes are undefeated in nine matches and are aiming at finishing the season with a perfect set of 10 wins. And even if it’s just for bragging rights that they beat the undefeated champs, San Pedro might just suit up the best team they can possibly field. So, if any game is going be worth watching this weekend, it’s the last one.

Garden City open the weekend on Saturday at 6:00 pm against Wagiya at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium where all the FFB Top League games are played.

Then Sunday, Altitude play Caesar Ridge at 3:30 pm before the Pirates close against Verdes at 6:00 pm.
