Police Commissioner: ‘COVID-19 prevention is the responsibility of all Belizeans’

Posted: Wednesday, December 15, 2021. 3:13 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams is appealing to all Belizeans this Christmas season to take the necessary precautions to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

Today Williams said emphatically that whenever COVID cases spike, the public tends to blame the police or health authorities, but never people practicing irresponsible behavior that caused the surge in cases and deaths related to the virus.

“It is the behavior of us, the people, that causes the numbers to go up. When we have people behaving irresponsibly having parties here there and everywhere, having social events here there and everywhere these are the things that take the numbers up,” Williams said.

He noted that younger Belizeans are particular offenders in that regard, engaging in risky behavior because they feel their immune system will withstand infection, but then taking the virus to someone more vulnerable.

“I want to appeal to our people as we enter this yuletide season, please remember that we are not out of the woods where COVID-19 is concerned,” he added. “Yes the police will be out there in full force enforcing regulations but the police cannot be everywhere to monitor everybody’s behavior. We have a population of over 400 and odd thousand people we have just over 2000 police officers so we cannot mind everybody.”

Williams said that the department expects each person will take it upon themselves and act responsibly and refrain from activities that are prohibited because doing so would put their lives and the lives of others at risk.
