Police Department wants you to be cautious for Christmas

Posted: Wednesday, December 15, 2021. 3:24 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Police Department, in light of the increase in shopping activity with the Christmas season, is asking all Belizeans to be extra careful this season to avoid robberies and home invasions.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams noted today that criminals will be looking for shoppers to rob and homes to break into, and called for the public to be extra vigilant in public spaces. Williams pleaded with shoppers to not carry large amounts of cash, not to flash cash in public, and not to leave ATMs with money in hand.

Those in vehicles are urged to park somewhere with good lighting and ensure that their keys are in hand when headed to their vehicle to avoid standing in front of it looking for the keys. Those leaving their homes are also urged to leave something on to give the appearance that someone is home, to deter potential burglars. He stressed that the department is doing everything it can to make the Christmas experience a safe one for all Belizeans and asked that the public do their part.

“I feel like if we do these things, we will be on good footing,” Williams said. “We have a presence in commercial areas while not neglecting the gang-ridden areas because we don’t want to be looking after one area only to have things go up in another area.”
