By Benjamin Flowers: Following a brutal brawl that left six people injured with machete wounds on Sunday, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams and several officers in the police senior command took a walk through the Krooman Lagoon Community and the adjoining Antelope Street Extension community, to speak with the residents there.
Williams explained to the media that the police have information that leads them to believe the escalating tensions and violence in the area are the result of infighting between members of the Mara Salvatrucha gang, commonly known as MS-13 gang. Williams said police went to the area to hear the concerns of the residents and begin building a relationship with them and the department as part of a strategy to address the situation.
“So what we want to be doing primarily is to build that relationship with the people so that they will feel that level of trust and confidence to come to us and give us information as it relates to potential or ongoing criminal activity within the particular area,” Williams said.
In the short term, the department has increased its visibility in the area by placing a police tent in the area and establishing a regular foot patrol which will give residents some reassurance of police support. Williams stressed that the tension will not disappear overnight but that building the relationship is a key component to finding a solution to the problem.
