By Aaron Humes: The Statistical Institute of Belize and the International Organization for Migration Belize office are presenting a more thorough review of data on migrants in Belize from the 2010 Population and Housing Census.
Acting Director-General Diana Castillo Trejo explained that a combination of timing and lack of resources led to the data being set aside. Not so with the forthcoming 2022 census which will have a specific section on migration data.
The 2010 data review is intended to provide a fuller view of the migrant population – who they are, what they are doing here, and where they came from.
The SIB is also projected to include a module on migration in the twice-yearly Labour Force Survey, to be presented next February.
The IOM’s Diana Locke made note that it is important to count all who call Belize home in order to provide services to them and be able to set policy for migration and associated issues.
