Joe Biden nominates 2-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan as ambassador to Belize

By Aaron Humes: After four years unfilled, President Joe Biden has nominated two-time Olympic medal-winning figure skater Michelle Kwan as U.S. ambassador to Belize, per AOL.

Kwan, 41, tweeted that if she is confirmed by the United States Senate, she would accept: “I am honored to be nominated by President Biden to serve as ambassador to Belize, and if confirmed, I will be very proud to serve my country.”

The White House announced Kwan’s nomination on Wednesday alongside the nomination of President John F. Kennedy’s daughter Caroline Kennedy as U.S. Ambassador to Australia.

Kwan won silver in 1998 in Nagano, Japan, and bronze in 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was a nine-time world champion between 1996 and 2004. Since her retirement she has moved into diplomacy and politics, being named the first American Public Diplomacy Envoy under President George W. Bush, then State Department senior adviser for public diplomacy and public affairs, and a member of the Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition under President Barack Obama. She is presently the global ambassador and treasurer for Special Olympics.

According to a White House statement, “For a decade, [Kwan] traveled extensively on behalf of the U.S. Department of State to engage youth around the world on social and educational issues.”

Officially, she would succeed Carlos Moreno who stood down at the start of Donald Trump’s Presidency. The senior American officials in Belize since then have been charge d’affaires ad interim Adrienne Galanek, Keith Gilges, and Leyla Moses-Ones.
