Frank ‘Papa’ Mena wins over $80,000 in damages in civil case for libel and defamation of character

By Benjamin Flowers: The Guardian reports that former United Democratic Party Area Representative Frank “Papa” Mena has won a libel suit against Indira Mejia over statements made during a social media broadcast back in April.

Mena, who filed the suit in May, was awarded $60,000 in damages for defamation and an additional $20,000 for aggravated damages. The Court also ordered that Mejia pay interest at the rate of 6% per annum from April 15th, 2021; and costs on the prescribed basis based on the award of damages. She is also prohibited whether personally or through any party acting on her behalf from further publishing and or disseminating any other such defamatory information regarding Mena.

Back in May, Mena filed the suit against Mejia, saying that during a press conference she alleged that he had conned two business owners, and abused his Ministerial power to obtain a prime piece of land.

When the case was heard before Justice Lisa Shoman, Mejia failed to provide a defense, and the award was granted to Mena. Mena’s attorney in the case was former Prime Minister Dean Barrow.
