Man accused of killing Hilberto Caliz remanded to prison until next April

By BBN Staff: Eighteen-year-old Jose Rafael Paiz, who stands charged for the shooting death of 35-year-old Hilberto Sajid Caliz, will be spending Christmas and New Year at the Belize Central Prison.

Paiz appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this week, answering to a single charge of murder.

As murder is not a bailable offense, Paiz was remanded to prison until April 6, 2022, where he will appear in the San Pedro Magistrate Court.

On Saturday, December 11, shortly after 5:00 p.m., Caliz was riding home from work when he was ambushed and shot several times. Quick response allowed police to apprehend him moments after the incident.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said that the motive of the killing is believed to be over a stolen bicycle. He also said that Paiz was recently fired from his job and sought revenge against the person he believed to be responsible for his dismissal.
