Second cattle shipment of three on its way to Mexico; in a week, $700,000 worth being exported to Mexico

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Two hundred eighty-one head of cattle are on their way to Mexico today Friday. This is part of the 750 the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) projected to be exported from Tuesday, December 14, to the coming Wednesday, December 22.

“281 head of cattle with a total weight of 132,807 pounds are on their way to Mexico today after three truckloads were exported from Kakabish in Orange Walk,” said Belarmino Esquivel, Principal Agriculture Office and Livestock Director at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

Like last Tuesday, Esquivel said today’s shipment is valued at approximately $260,000.

Up to today, the cumulative total is 2,676 bovines officially exported to Mexico since September 2020.

The Mexican animal health authority, Senasica, sent their veterinary inspectors to ensure the cattle is in good condition. They will be here again for the next shipment which should be leaving on Wednesday.

“We project that we will have 190 head of cattle accepted for export to SuKarne in Mexico for Wednesday,” said Esquivel.

The three shipments should garner an overall value of $700,000 for the livestock industry.

“That should bring the total exports to a cumulative of 2,866 livestock officially exported to Mexico since September 2020 when the cattle trade with Mexico started,” Esquivel said.

Esquivel projects that will have generated $2,600,000 in export earnings for Belize.

Meanwhile, the cattle trade with Guatemala since November 2020 is ongoing.

“The exports to Guatemala continue as well. A total of more than 42,000 head of cattle have been exported with a total value of $40 million over the last year,” Esquivel added.
