By BBN Staff: A Belize City woman was remanded to prison this week because she was unable to post her bail after being charged with theft.
Thirty-six-year-old Nioka Smith burst into tears in the courtroom after the prosecution objected to her bail on the grounds that she already has eight previous convictions for theft. The prosecution also said that it is possible Smith could attempt to contact witnesses if she is granted bail.
Meanwhile, Smith pleaded with the court that she receive bail so she can go home to her five children. The Magistrate ultimately decided to grant her bail in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same, on the condition that she pay $200 of a previous $500 fine that was unpaid. Smith was unable to pay and was remanded to prison until she is able to do so.
Smith was charged on Monday for stealing a bottle of rum from J&W Shopping Mall in Belize City, valued at $31.95.
