BSI/ASR argues against “transfer of value” in industry

By Aaron Humes: Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) has maintained that it would be difficult to conduct as requested by the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) “a greater transfer of value from mill to farmers at this difficult time for the industry.”

BSI/ASR is referring not only to a revised version of the formula for pricing sugar and molasses but also payment for bagasse and reducing the number of payments per season from three to two.

“We have maintained from the onset, that the economic viability of the mill is paramount…. Under the current levels of duress, it is difficult to consider any future investment,” BSI writes.

Nevertheless, the miller hopes that the BSCFA will seriously consider the proposal it has been presented and the crop will open next Monday peacefully and a resolution that is mutually beneficial will be signed before the termination takes effect.

It also warns in an apparent shot at the Government that “Unlawful intervention in the legitimate rights of a business in Belize by any party will be dealt with through appropriate legal process. BSI remains a responsible and dependable partner for the development of the northern sugar industry and by extension the country of Belize.”
