By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Jewel Fury defend their National Amateur Women’s League Championship against Rumberas on Saturday at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan.
Fury are gunning for their 4th consecutive national title while Rumberas are on the hunt their first.
In 2019, Jewel Fury just barely beat Rumberas by a 3-2 aggregate score.
On Sunday, December 15, 2019, they drew 1-1 at Bella Vista with MVP Jennisha Scott giving Jewel Fury the lead in the 2nd half. Jessica Acevedo tied the match for Rumberas in injury time.
In the return match on Saturday, December 14, 2019, at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium, Rumberas showed Fury started off pumping as Deysi Beltran converted in the second minute. Jewel Fury rallied back and drew the game even in the 11th through Jayda Brown. However, Scott made Fury erupt in celebration when she converted from the penalty spot in injury time giving them the 2-1 win and their third back-to-back title.
Last year, there was no competition because of COVID-19.
This year both played in NAWL South. Again, it wasn’t easy, but Fury prevailed over Rumberas 2-1 on Sunday, November 28, at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.
Brown, the tournament’s top scorer, opened the score in the 22nd for Jewel Fury but Roshanny Narvaez tied it up one minute later in the 23rd. The victory for Fury came in the 58th when Janivi Quiroz struck the winner.
Rumberas are now going for revenge on Saturday, December 18, at 3:00 pm at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in the 2021 NAWL Final. In the semifinals, Jewel Fury had a rough time beating San Pedro Pirates 1-0 while Rumberas blanked the Verdes Rebel Girls 2-0.
So, who do you bet on this time? Jayda Brown or Kaite Jones? Jewel Fury for four straight or Rumberas for their first?
