Jump on your bike, join the Glow Ride in Belize City on Saturday evening

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Jump on your bike this Saturday evening and join the Glow Ride in Belize City.

“Bring your wheels and let’s have some family fun,” says the Glow Ride flyer.

The ride starts at 6:00 pm at City Hall, downtown Belize City on Regent Street. After going around Belize City, it should finish at City Hall at about 8:00 pm.

“Light up ya bikes, rollerblades, skateboards!” says Alexi Ordonez of Ordonez Bile Repair and Sale who is working along with Belize City Councillor Kaya Cattouse in putting the Glow Ride on Saturday evening in Belize City.

“I just want to have a family activity that we can have in the evening time. So that the kids enjoy it, we add the cosmetics of the lights other than just riding around town, anything on wheels if you want to put your lights on it. If you want to put your lights on your helmet, on your gears, on your clothing, that is welcome as well. It’s a nighttime ride so we want to have the people well visible. The idea is to be well lit on the road and to promote the safety of riding with lights.”

“Let’s make this a Christmas tradition,” said Kaya.

Kaya said after the parade prizes will be given to the youngest participant and for the best decorated bike (with lights), and that there will be free raffle giveaways.

Ordonez said that registration will start at 6:00 pm at City Hall.

“It’s best if you go out there from the start and register because you have a chance to win things ranging from a haircut treatment to a dental appointment, to a platter from Don Carlos, or even a ham and a turkey for the season, just to name a few,” Ordonez said.

Ordonez said he got the idea from Mexico and California where people do family rides on Sunday evening.

“I just want to encourage some sort of healthy activity. What we have been dealing with pre-pandemic and during the pandemic is that people are being less active. They stay home and they stay on their digital devices. We have very little activity, especially with the children these days,” Ordonez said.
