Posted: Sunday, December 19, 2021. 11:58 pm CST.

By Hugh O’Brien: Elena Cho, a graduate of Julian Cho Technical High School and a 2021 graduate of the University of Belize, is the first female police officer to hail from the village of San Vicente in the Toledo District. In so doing, Elena has made history bringing pride to her parents, residents of San Vicente, fellow Maya communities, Maya leaders, political leaders, residents of the Toledo district and Belizeans in general.

Elena sealed her fate in history when she graduated on Friday, December 17, 2021 as part Recruit Squad No. 95 and joined the ranks of the Belize Police Department. A total of 220 officers – 167 males and 53 males – graduated on Friday and in their own way made history as well by being the largest Recruit Squad ever to graduate from the National Police Training Academy.

Elena Cho, a Maya by descent, received much commendation for her achievement. Area Representative for Toledo West which includes San Vicente, Oscar Requena, posted on social media that it was a “historic moment” and that he was proud of PC Elena Cho from San Vicente in becoming the first Female Police Officer from San Vicente Toledo”. Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development. Labour and Local Government, Valentino Shal, also posted his kudos on social media saying “First female Police Officer from San Vicente, Toledo. Put that in the history books.”

Elena herself was so proud of her achievement and thankful to those who supported her.

“Finally made it with the guidance and protection from God each and everyday for the past 7 months of training to become an aspiring Police Officer. I am thankful for my wonderful mother who is always there for me, thank you so much for all you’ve done for me and to my godparents thank you…Love you all tons. I am here to make you all proud,” she said.

And in an encouraging and historic style Elena Cho wrote a positive message to all in her social media post saying “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams”.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) takes this opportunity to join Belizeans in congratulating Elena Cho on her achievement and in making history.
