By Hugh O’Brien: A Pop-up display promoting small businesses was held on Saturday, December 18, 2021, at the 501 Hub restaurant at No. 13 Cork Street in Belize City .
The event, organized by Mari’s Cakes, had a diversity of Belizean products on display, including Doni & Dodits Donut Shop, Salutarisbz healthcare products, Pieces of Me Belize jewelry, Beauty Stop boutique, Shade Co. Artisanal Candles, Oshanz Detox Drinks and ArtRoom Supplies.
Attending the event was Prime Minister John Briceño who highlighted that “small business is the engine of growth in our communities and economy” and that he is “so proud to recognize the entrepreneurial spirit of our young people”. According to PM Briceño all the businesses who showcased their products on Saturday are owned by young entrepreneurs under the age of 35, with the youngest being only 10 years old.
In a social media post, Briceño went on to thank Mari’s Cakes for organizing the event and he encouraged the hosting of more events like these. “Providing a space for businesses to flourish and expand in the community has been a long time goal” and “remaining responsive to the needs of our MSMEs is central for our government economic recovery”, said Briceño.
Saturday’s Pop-up display is the fourth of its kind and the last one programmed for 2021. The event began at 9:00 am and ended at 4:00 pm and door prizes were awarded through raffles held every half an hour.
