Livestock Producers Association distances self from cocaine smuggling incident in the south

Posted: Monday, December 20, 2021. 6:08 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA) has distanced itself from a report of a Guatemalan cattle trader caught with cocaine in the Toledo District on Sunday afternoon.

In a statement the BLPA pointed out that the vehicle was not transporting cattle at the time despite it being nominally used for that purpose, and that the owner did not have a movement permit to transport cattle despite being a registered trader and transporter with the BLPA.

The Association deplored the actions of those arrested (but not yet charged), and regrets that their actions might tarnish the reputation and good name of the industry, the Association and those it represents. It calls all members and others in the industry to avoid getting involved in illegal activities including drug trafficking lest it injure an industry just getting back into gear after a year of struggles.
