By Aaron Humes: Largely unconfirmed reports suggest former Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero is officially out of a job.
A year ago, he had tested positive for COVID-19 and the new government began to lay plans to remove him, first suggesting he had been involved in certain impropriety then expressing the need for change at the top.
But with the goodwill of Belizeans behind him and bolstered by his own self-effacing demeanor, Dr. Manzanero clung until his post was abolished by a legislative amendment in the House and Senate. The posts are yet to be filled and Dr. Francis Morey continues to be acting Director.
Dr. Manzanero has remained publicly silent on the issue, choosing to focus on his hobby of marathon running and turning more recently to the reminiscence of his time in hospital.
But Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa, Deputy Regional Health Manager, Central Health Region who was called on to hold over for him during his illness, told Channel 5 News that beyond the politics, Dr. Manzanero was first and foremost a colleague and a friend: “We’ve worked together even from before COVID and around COVID, we’ve spoken to each other on a regular basis with regards to the measures and our country’s response. I’ve tried to really remain out of all that politics and what’s been happening there because we’ve been so busy with COVID and trying to respond to COVID. But even prior to that, Doctor Manzanero had always mentioned to me you can help as much as you can and coming to Belmopan, assisting at my desk as well; and I just wish him all the best.”
