Belize might not be opening land borders until February but Los Cocos Hotel in Chetumal is ready

Posted: Thursday, December 23, 2021. 6:35 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On Wednesday afternoon at 1:10, four hours before the Government of Belize (GOB) announced through a GOB Press Office release at 5:20, that it will no longer be reopening the land borders on January 1, 2022, Los Cocos Hotel located in downtown Chetumal on Avenida Héroes posted on social media that it is ready for Belizeans.

“¡Welcome back, Belizean friends! We look forward to the opening of the border, and to be able to receive you at home,” said Los Cocos Hotel.

The post was accompanied by images of Los Cocos sidewalk, La Palma Restaurant, and Cafe looking festive with red, white, and blue decorations including star piñatas which have the Belize ‘Sub Umbra Floreo’ Coat of Arms in the center.

“Simply Wonderful! Asi es Belize y su gente. (That’s how Belize and its people are),” reads a welcome poster at the entrance featuring the Belize National flag and photographs of Belizean children, a steel band, and several men and women.

“Belize, Hotel Los Cocos Love U.”

This goes to show how much Chetumal misses the Belizean business.

Belizeans have been yearning to head over to Chetumal and Melchor in particular, to “stretch our dollars” as Prime Minister Briceño said, but across the border, the businesses have been suffering as well without the Belizean dollars flowing in.

At this time of the year, thousands of Belizeans would be shopping over in Chetumal and Melchor but that has not been the case for two years in a row.

For now, both them and we will have to wait tentatively until February. That’s when the Government of Belize intends to reopen the land borders – and that depends on how the country deals with the COVID-19 pandemic. For now, the concern is the Omicron variant which is spreading like wildfire around the world.

Belize is bracing for it.

Los Cocos might have to put up new decorations because those they put up yesterday will have faded by the time the borders reopen.
