Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital celebrates rise in patient recovery

By Aaron Humes: As the days get shorter, so does COVID-19’s grip on Belize, even with the Omicron variant lying in wait.

On Wednesday, the national referral hospital and chief COVID center, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City, celebrated a patient leaving COVID-free after 14 days, 76-year-old Cecilia Savery.

As the hospital notes, “Our success rate at the unit has been on the rise with 70 percent of our admissions ending in favorable patient discharges.”

Ministry of Health and Wellness data indicates that ten patients countrywide remain hospitalized with COVID-19, the majority unvaccinated; three of these are in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Amid the emotional sendoff, the hospital reminded, “Although our COVID numbers are on the decline…we remind the public to continue to adhere to the protocols that has gotten us here. As we enter the holiday season we urge you to please continue to be safe.”
