Police welcome information on ‘suspicious character and activity’ in Link Road/Western Paradise area

By Aaron Humes: The third confirmed murder reported along the John Smith Link Road in the last few months has unnerved residents of the communities making up the village of Western Paradise along the George Price Highway.

Many residents in the area use the road for exercise early in the morning and late in the evening and there is seldom a police patrol anywhere along the road, residents have informed BBN.

We are also told that residents have noted suspicious activity along that road recently in the form of a questionable character riding along the road near the Western Pines entrance while people are exercising, in an intimidating manner.

The question for police is, will they consider increasing patrols around those times for the safety of the residents who use that road?

We put the question to Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Officer, who explained that police do have a presence in that area: “We do have an assigned vehicle for that area; but like you rightfully said, the Eight Miles community has grown, and is fast outgrowing itself, where we believe that the strength of the daily patrols needs to be increased.”

He added that police are aware that people use the road for exercise and that a motorcycle patrol has been added, but police cannot be everywhere at once.

In the case of the “suspicious character” and any other eyebrow-raising activity, ASP Yearwood advises that residents should look out for themselves by reporting the matter as quickly as possible to police: “I am hoping that they relay that to the police out there this morning and maybe even before this morning and if they haven’t, I would appreciate if they would come forward and share this information with us at the police department. Maybe this would be a critical lead towards solving this crime or for us to discourage these types of elements from entering or re-entering that area.”

As to whether the death had anything to do with Zihui He’s brother, who owns Jacky’s Fast Food Restaurant and Store in the Westlake Park area where earlier this year, a robber was killed by the proprietor during a heist gone wrong, ASP Yearwood indicated that he would not speculate on that.
