Could apparent murder in Seine Bight have been prevented? Police open internal investigation into officer’s absence

By Aaron Humes: A young resort worker did not live to see Christmas, his partner has been left traumatized and devastated, and hanging over it all is a question: when it counted, where were the Police?

Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Officer for the Belize Police Department, announced that at the order of Police Commissioner Chester Williams, there is an internal investigation into why no police officer was on duty at the Seine Bight Police Station during the time when 23-year-old Namid Mesh was stabbed to death around midnight this morning, Friday.

As explained by ASP Yearwood: “Linda Vigil reported that she was at home when her ex-common-law Jorge Triminio entered her home – I must mention that they have been separated in excess of two months – and while she asked him to leave, he didn’t want to do so, and every time she made an attempt to leave the home, he locked the entrance/exit. She managed to get out of the apartment and walk to the Seine Bight Police Station; unfortunately, when she got there the police were not there.”

Officially police cannot account for Triminio’s whereabouts during the time Vigil was at the station up to when she got back home, by which time Mesh had also arrived; we are told that it is believed Triminio was lying in wait for them. He waited a few minutes after Vigil returned home and Mesh also arrived to confront both of them, police suspect, but only the accused knows for sure.

ASP Yearwood picked up what happened from there: “Triminio returned [and] forced his way into their apartment. Because he was familiar with that home, he got a knife from the kitchen where he inflicted several stab wounds to Mesh. Triminio proceeded to wash the knife in the same home, leaving it behind, and fled the scene.”

Mesh was rushed to the Polyclinic in Placencia where he died of his injuries; a post-mortem examination is scheduled. Triminio has been detained and will very likely face charges.

So where were the cops? No one yet knows, but ASP Yearwood made clear that “We believe that if that officer was at his place, we could have prevented this unfortunate incident that took the life of [Namid Mesh].” But he did also point out that if the accused’s mind was made up there was little stopping him.

Investigations continue.
