By Benjamin Flowers: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing, under a pilot project to provide low-cost housing to deserving families, handed over 19 houses last week in the Cayo and Stann Creek districts.
A total of fourteen houses were handed out in the Cayo district, and five in Stann Creek. Marisa Alamilla, Marketing and Publicity Manager for the Ministry said that there are another 30 homes currently under construction and several applications to go before the housing committee in the new year.
She also noted that the project comes with many challenges as the ministry seeks to transform the lives of Belizeans in need of a place to call home.
“One of the hold-ups we’ve been having is that candidates do not have land or they have land and we have to do the search to ensure that the property is there,” Alamilla said.
There will be a total of 150 houses built under the pilot phase of the project, with a target of five homes in each constituency countrywide.
