Fitzgerald ‘Palas’ Joseph wins Chief’s Single-Cien Boxing Day Race

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Fitzgerald ‘Palas’ Joseph, riding for M&M Engineering, won the Chief’s Single-Cien Boxing Day Cycling Race organized by Santino Castillo held on Boxing Day, Sunday, December 26.

Joseph won the Single Cien (100 km – 62.5 miles) race in two hours 39 minutes and 30 seconds in solo fashion beating the field by 20 seconds. Palas clocked a speed an average speed of 23.6 miles per hour.

He collected a prize of $400 for winning the race which sported a field of 81 riders, the biggest this year since racing resumed.

Kenroy ‘Smokes’ Gladden of Kulture ($260) rode in second followed by M&M’s Roque Matus ($140) in third place, FAL’s Sherwin Roca ($105) in fourth, and Rural Boyz’s Claude Young ($70) in fifth.

Young was followed by a huge field.

Palas not only won the A Category, he also tipped the 50-59 category.

Santino won the 60-plus category.

The race started at Old Belize on the George Price Highway, went to Hattieville, turned onto the Burrell Boom Road, then the Philip Goldson Highway, Airport Road, John Smith Road (Link Road), George Price Highway, Hattieville, Boom Road, Philip Goldson Highway to Belize City finishing at Mirab for a total of 62.5 miles or 100 kilometers.

The race was sponsored by the Castillo businesses (Bottom-Dollar, Save-U, Santiago Castillo, Angelus Press, and the People’s Store), the Belize City Council, and David Banner’s Horse Stables. Apart from the individual category prizes, the Single-Cien also distributed $1,000 in station prizes.

Recently, Santino and other Belizean riders rode in the Triple-Cien in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He said that gave him the idea to organize this 100-kilometer race, hence the name Single-Cien.
