By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Mike Phillips won the C-Category in the Chief’s Single-Cien Boxing Day Race organized by Santino Castillo held on Boxing Day, Sunday, December 26.
The overall winner of the Single Cien (100 km – 62.5 miles) race was Fitzgerald ‘Palas’ Joseph who clocked two hours 39 minutes and 30 seconds in solo fashion beating the field by 20 seconds. The Single-Cien sported a field of 81 riders, the biggest this year since racing resumed.
Phillips collected a prize of $175 for winning the C-Category.
Truckers’ Manuel Esquiliano ($105) finished in second position while Antonio Escarpeta ($70) took the third spot.
Kenny ‘Kuchin’ Goodin won the B-Category.
Joseph also won the 50-59 category while Santino ‘The Chief’ Castillo won the 60-plus.
The race started at Old Belize on the George Price Highway, went to Hattieville, turned onto the Burrell Boom Road, then the Philip Goldson Highway, Airport Road, John Smith Road (Link Road), George Price Highway, Hattieville, Boom Road, Philip Goldson Highway to Belize City finishing at Mirab for a total of 62.5 miles or 100 kilometers.
The race was sponsored by the Castillo businesses (Bottom-Dollar, Save-U, Santiago Castillo, Angelus Press, and the People’s Store), the Belize City Council, and David Banner’s Horse Stables. Apart from the individual category prizes, the Single-Cien also distributed $1,000 in station prizes.
Recently, Santino and other Belizean riders rode in the Triple-Cien in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He said that gave him the idea to organize this 100-kilometer race, hence the name Single-Cien.
