By BBN Staff: A Belize City resident is being investigated in connection with the death of his brother, despite the wishes of his mother.

Communications Director for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood said that police were called to Medical Associates on St. Thomas Street, Belize City on December 24, after a patient there became unresponsive and died. Initial investigation revealed that 16-year-old Keenan Young had gotten into an altercation with his brother on December 4, during which his brother hit him on the head.

Young complained of pain in the days following the incident and was eventually taken for medical treatment. He died while being tended to by doctors.

“We are not certain as yet what the charges will be, if any, would be levied against his brother, but based on the post-mortem we will know which direction the investigation will go,” Yearwood said.

Reports are that Young’s mother does not want any charges levied against her son; however, Yearwood explained that the matter is not under her control.

“With all due respect to the mother that is her wishes, but we owe it to the state to investigate the loss of anybody’s life, regardless if it is at the hands of your parents or your siblings, a life has been lost. And based on the outcome of our investigation will determine whether or not he will be charged. The mother cannot make that decision on behalf of the deceased because it is now a state matter, and we represent the victim in this case,” Yearwood added.
