By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Benque’s traditional End-of-the-Year Veterans vs Youth football match on December 31 will be played in honour of doctors Kevin and Kenneth Guerra who passed away last year as victims of COVID-19. Both, known as ‘Los Cuaches’ because they were twins, were avid football players. They played for Benque teams including Verdes and for the Belize Junior National Team.
The two brothers, who were very much loved in Benque Viejo del Carmen, also played in the End-of-the-Year game for the Youth teams.
The first of these games was played 25 years ago. Though the Vets have won more games, over the last few years the match has ended in a draw.
Even though they are older, slower, and far from their youthful days, the Veterans using their skills and experience, have won more games than the Youths in the traditional Veterans vs Youth End-of-the-Year football game which is played every year on December 31 in Benque Viejo del Carmen. Of course, last year there was no game because of the pandemic.
To maintain the tradition going, this year’s match has been scheduled for 3:00 pm on Friday, December 31, at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium.
The match features only players who either were born in Benque or live in Benque.
Players such as Erwin Contreras, Errol Coleman, Cesar Mendez, Rene Montero have featured regularly.
This year, expect to see Cesar Mendez, Shamir Pacheco, Amin Cano, and possibly Jorge Garcia, to name only a few of the older guys.
The Youth will feature Verdes’ Owen Sosa, Desmond Wade, Jaylon Lennan, and San Pedro’s Moises Martinez to name a few as well.
