BREAKING: Cane farmers block entrance to BSI; cane delivery comes to an abrupt halt

Posted: Tuesday, December 28, 2021. 7:02 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Video seen by Breaking Belize News shows the entrance of Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) blocked by cane trucks this evening – but they were not delivering cane.

We understand that the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) has resolved not to deliver its cane as called on by BSI/ASR this morning after not securing an interim agreement based on the current commercial agreement with BSI/ASR and an extension to August of 2021 rather than April as is in the current proposal. However, we are not clear as to who is the source of the blockade at Tower Hill.

According to BSI/ASR officials they have accepted the agreement in principle.

This latest breakdown follows Monday’s spat among members and former members of the Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association (CSCPA) who complained about being left off the delivery list.

We continue to follow the latest developments on a troubled start to the sugar season.
