By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As part of its recognition of frontline heroes, the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) awarded a staycation package to Nurse Donaldine Lizama, Nursing Supervisor for the Central Health Region and the head of the Ministry of Health’s vaccination program.

Responsible for the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccines in the Central Health Region – the most populated region in the country, Nurse Lizama said their job is to get the vaccine in as many arms as possible.

“It was very heartbreaking to have pregnant women dying from this disease or dying after they had delivered, leaving children, when we know that the vaccines can prevent illness and save lives,” she said as she encouraged Belizeans to get vaccinated.

“I’m encouraging Belize to come and get your vaccines. Refrain from large gatherings and if you don’t feel well, stay at home,” Nurse Lizama said.

“Nurse Lizama has dedicated her life to nursing as a public health nurse from 1999 and has worked at the KHMH, and both the Northern and Central Regions,” BTB said.

“In her current role, she coordinates all outreach for the ministry’s vaccine drive, working with the private and public sectors to carry out onsite vaccination for their staff. She also spearheads the health education for all nurses. Nurse Lizama often dedicates long hours and nights to ensure the accuracy of the daily Covid-19 reports.”

The BTB awarded Nurse Liazma a staycation package for two. The package includes a two-night stay courtesy of Chabil Mar Belize Resort in Placencia, round-trip tickets courtesy of Tropic Air Belize, a snorkeling tour for 2 courtesy of the Splash Dive Center and dinner for 2 at Maya Beach Hotel Bistro and $2,500 cash compliments of the Belize Tourism Board.

“This reward is a very big deal for me,” said Nurse Lizama.

“It shows that our hard work has not gone unnoticed, and it motivates me to carry on with the work that I have to do. I would like to thank the BTB and all their sponsors for this award. It means so much to me.”
