By BBN Staff: A Belize City man pleaded guilty to two firearm offenses in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, to allow for his girlfriend to be spared going to prison.
Twenty-three-year-old Ryan Young Jr. and 20-year-old Chelsey Lewis appeared in court, represented by attorney Norman Rodriguez, to answer to one count each of kept firearm without a gun license and kept ammunition without a gun license. The charges are with respect to a .9mm pistol and an extended magazine containing 16 lives rounds, found on Boxing Day during a police search at Young’s home.
Initially, both parties pleaded not guilty and Rodriguez asked the magistrate to exercise her discretion to grant Lewis bail as she is the mother of a two-year-old child. However, the prosecution reminded the magistrate that the law does not empower a Magistrate with discretion in such a case. They were both remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until February 28, 2022.
Young then made the decision to change his not guilty plea to guilty. The Magistrate cautioned him that sentencing for his crime came with mandatory jail time, but he maintained his guilty plea. He was sentenced to two years in prison for the gun and one year for the ammunition, but since the sentences will run concurrently, he will only serve a total of two years. The prosecution then withdrew the charges from Lewis and she was free to go.
