By Aaron Humes: Two years and ten months after she was unceremoniously removed from her property, Belmopan resident Nicolasa Cus and her family were one of the first recipients of houses under a new housing scheme by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing.
But her story is particularly special as recounted by her area representative, Oscar Mira.
Cus and her family were evicted from the property she had built on by the Reconstruction and Development Corporation (RECONDEV), former managers of the City of Belmopan, because the land had been sold.
After fifteen years living on the land, she had to be removed. Mira said he took on the case personally, seeking avenues of redress in the courts and elsewhere to no avail.
And when he won the general election last November, he explained, “I knew who the very first house built by the PUP in Belmopan would go to. The very first house built in Belmopan would go to Ms. Nicolasa Cus.”
Last week, that promise was fulfilled. She was quiet, thankful and most importantly, home again.
The Briceno administration has promised up to 10 thousand such houses in its five years in office.
