BREAKING: Blockade of sugar factory suspended, negotiations continue says Prime Minister

Posted: Wednesday, December 29, 2021. 4:35 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño and his Agriculture Minister Jose Mai told reporters this afternoon that the blockade of the Tower Hill factory by the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association will be lifted pending further negotiations on Thursday.

“What I am prepared to tell you now is that the cane farmers, their leaders have agreed to remove the barrier from in front of the factory; BSI has given assurance that they will not receive cane for the next 24 hours; and that if we sign an interim agreement tomorrow, they will start receiving cane from cane farmers on Friday at six a.m.,” the Prime Minister explained.

He said further that “we believe we have made progress, but we feel that we will be able to finalize an agreement [on Thursday],” noting that he had been in touch with ASR general manager Celestino Ruiz and vice-president for international relations and the company’s face in Belize, Mac Maclachlan.

So far we have not been able to confirm with any of our sources whether the blockade has indeed been lifted. We will continue trying to do so.
