By Aaron Humes: Reports from the ground at Tower Hill, Orange Walk says cañeros have given a resounding “no” to any attempt to end their blockade after the Prime Minister made assurances that BSI would not receive any cane from any association for the next 24 hours after an interim agreement has been signed.
Chairman of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association Andy Westby and director Alfredo Ortega barely needed to poll farmers at the site for their response, based on feelings that they may be tricked by the powers that be.
Speaking briefly to reporters, Ortega archly reminded Prime Minister John Briceno, who has long claimed cañero heritage and association, that it was the votes of cañeros that have seated him, Agriculture Minister Jose Mai, and four other People’s United Party representatives from the North on Independence Hill.
Police had been to the area earlier but were assured that farmers would not take their blockade to the Philip Goldson Highway, impeding traffic in and out of Orange Walk.
