Cultural icon Myrna Manzanares laid to rest today

By Benjamin Flowers: Today, Belize said its final goodbyes to cultural icon Myrna Manzanares.

Following a memorial service at All Saints Church in Belize City, her body was taken back to her village, Gales Point Manatee, for burial.

The 75-year-old past president of the National Kriol Council and Cultural Attaché, died last week at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, while in the Intensive Care Unit.

She is predeceased by her mother Iris Abraham and brother Wayne Neal. She is survived by her daughter Shalini Manzanares; son, Robert Spain; grandchildren, Ansel, Nathifa, Rayzaun, and Renae; two brothers Lance Lockwood and Selwyn Terry, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Since her passing, numerous organizations that have worked with her in the areas of promoting culture have publicly expressed their condolences, while highlighting the contributions she made to Belize during her life as an educator, published writer, dramatist, international storyteller, community counselor, and cultural activist.
