By Aaron Humes: The Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) contends that the Government “do not command the trust or confidence of stakeholders in the industry to act as sincere and objective brokers.”
To resolve the current crisis in the industry, it therefore maintains, there is need for an independent expert to assist in mediating a settlement.
In its statement the party expressed regret over what so far has been a failure to hammer out a workable agreement for the commencement of the season and disappointment over the government’s inability to broker such a settlement, as well as the violence seen on Monday in apparent displeasure over the position of other stakeholders.
“The Sugar Industry is too important to the survival of tens of thousands of Belizeans in the North and too vital to the country’s economy for all efforts not to be exhausted in order to protect and preserve it,” the party concludes.
