Belize National Teachers Union and Trade Union Congress supporting cane farmers

By Aaron Humes: The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) and Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) have made an appearance in Orange Walk in support of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA).

The presidents of each, Luke Martinez and Elena Smith, took breakfast this morning for the farmers and pledged their support, but asked that they keep things peaceful.

At this hour negotiations have resumed in Orange Walk Town and the Farmers have set a 3 p.m. deadline to get the interim agreement signed, else the area is blocked off again and they resume negotiations tomorrow. The Prime Minister yesterday stated BSI was hoping for a resolution that would allow them to resume taking cane at the break of dawn Friday morning.

A truck has remained in front of the cane scale, as farmers warn no false moves on the part of BSI.
