China bans national team football players from having tattoos to set ‘good example for society’

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “The national team and the U23 national team athletes are strictly prohibited from having new tattoos, and those who already have tattoos are advised to remove them themselves,” said the General Administration of Sport of China (GAS), according to Reuters.

The decision by GAS comes after an increasing number of Chinese players have been getting tattoos, the case of international defender Zhang Linpeng.

Reuters said Linpeng was told to cover up his tattoos when playing for the China national team and his club Guangzhou FC.

“National teams at all levels will strictly implement the relevant requirements of the management measures… (and) fully demonstrate the positive spirit of Chinese football players and set a good example for society,” said GAS.

“The national team and the U23 national team athletes are strictly prohibited from having new tattoos, and those who already have tattoos are advised to remove them themselves.”

GAS said that under special circumstances agreed by the teams, the players have to cover up the tattoos during training and matches.
