COVID strikes back: Active cases above 1,000 and one new death amid threat of Omicron variant

Posted: Thursday, December 30, 2021. 6:08 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Data from the Ministry of Health and Wellness issued this evening confirms Belize’s precarious position entering the New Year: between the “devil” of Delta and the “deep blue sea” of Omicron.

Until results come back in a few weeks’ time indicating the presence of the latter (ie. Omicron), the former appears to be wreaking havoc, with 421 new cases reported today countrywide against 37 new recoveries.

The number of active cases now stands at 1,270, with 228 samples under investigation. One new death was also reported.

2,014 tests were conducted today on 1,989 persons, both rapid and PCR; the positivity rate was 21.2 percent.

Overall, 32,488 persons have contracted COVID-19 since March of 2020, with more than 30 thousand recovered.
