By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) Fellowship Programme (2022) offers one “year of education and diplomatic training at the United Nations in New York” to ten persons from member states yearly.

Applications for the fellowship programme are now open and will remain so until Friday, January 14, 2022.

Though Belize is not an island, it is a member of AOSIS which comprises 39 countries, 16 from the Caribbean, 15 from the Pacific, and eight from the African, Indian Ocean, and South China Sea areas.

AOSIS says the education and diplomatic training prepares the fellows “to become leaders in their countries on climate change, sustainable development and oceans”.

The Government of Belize Press Office said the AOSIS Fellowship “is an excellent opportunity for young professionals from AOSIS countries (across the Caribbean region, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean) to get hands-on training on relevant issues of law, policy, and science and to build capacity in AOSIS member governments to engage on climate change, oceans and sustainable development”.

AOSIS says their Fellowship has been training the next generation of AOSIS leaders and environmental experts over the last decade.

“This unique SIDS-designed program brings early career professionals from AOSIS member countries to New York for one year to participate … with their country’s delegation at the United Nations Headquarters and at international negotiations,” says the AOSIS on their website.

“The program provides Fellows with the unique opportunity to gain real-world UN experience while participating in a world-class training program.”

AOSIS says that since 2018, the Fellowship has been made possible by the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition.

Applications should be sent to Belize’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, which can be contacted at the following email address: [email protected].

If applicants have questions about the Fellowship, questions should be directed to: [email protected].
