Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner: “Hopeful optimism for what lies ahead”

By Aaron Humes: Mayor of Belize City Bernard Wagner reviewed the year that was on a municipal level, declaring that despite the COVID challenge, the Old Capital had “crossed the finish line with hopeful optimism for what lies ahead.”

Part of that optimism lies with the youth – the new hands at the Council’s offices across the City; the 150 youth-led enterprises supported with business development advice, working capital, and other tools for success; and the establishment of a Youth Shadow Council, working to build inclusion and leadership. This investment “is an investment in the now, to capitalize on the digital age we’re in, as we work on transforming Belize City into a modern, smart, inclusive, resilient, and healthy City, and we know our young people will be the ultimate drivers of this transformation.”

As for plans in 2022, Wagner announced a planned rollout of green electric buses intended to make public transportation more reliable, safe, and environmentally friendly, and solar-powered parking meters – “not for the greater collection of revenue,” according to Wagner, but making commerce more efficient.

Wagner further promised more public-private partnerships to improve economic prosperity, job creation, infrastructure, and security. Easing the cost of doing business in the City will lead, he said, to more innovation, more business, more employment, less crime, and more revenues for City Hall, which goes back into its services and improved quality of life.
