Betty White, better known as Rose of TV sitcom “The Golden Girls”, dies at 99

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Betty White, better known to many Belizean as Rose of TV sitcom “The Golden Girls”, passed away on Friday morning.

When television was new to Belize and Belizeans watched the Chicago Cubs on WGN Chicago, one of the popular sitcoms was “The Golden Girls”. Betty White who played the part of Rose became an everyday staple here in Belize.

The Golden Girls ran from 1985 to 1992.

White died 18 days shy of her 100th birthday on January 17. According to TMZ she was not ill, and it’s considered she died of natural causes.

Born Betty Marion White Ludden on January 17, 1922, White had the longest lasting acting career with more than 90 years in the entertainment business.

She began working in radio at the age of eight in 1930 and never looked back.

White is noted for being the first woman to produce a sitcom “Life with Elizabeth”.

She’s remembered for her roles on television as Sue Ann Nivens on the CBS sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” which ran from 1973 to 1977, Rose in the NBC sitcom “The Golden Girls”, and Elka Ostrovsky on the TV Land’s “Hot in Cleveland” from 2010 to 2015.

She was also a panelist on quite a number game shows like Password, Match Game, Tattletales, To Tell the Truth, The Hollywood Squares, and The $25,000 Pyramid.

In 1983, she was the first woman to receive the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show Host for the “Just Men!”.

She also had her own show, “The Betty White Show”.

Betty White raked five Primetime Emmy Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, American Comedy Awards and a Grammy in 2012.

Just last week, White was in the news when she told People magazine, “I’ve heard Ryan [Reynolds] can’t get over his thing for me”. White and Reynolds co-starred in the 2009 movie, “The Proposal”.
