By Aaron Humes: After a tumultuous year to say the least, Haitians are marking the New Year in a special way.
January 1 is also Independence Day in Haiti, the first Caribbean nation to earn Independence from France 218 years ago.
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has sent early congratulations through Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett.
“As the Government and people of Haiti enter a new year of independence, CARICOM extends its best wishes for goodwill and unity to prevail in the current multifaceted challenges,” Secretary-General Dr. Barnett said in her congratulatory message to Prime Minister Dr. Ariel Henry.
She continued, “The Community sends a message of hope to all Haitians as they commemorate this auspicious event that has served as an inspirational symbol of indomitable strength for the region… I take this opportunity to assure you of the Community’s unwavering commitment and support to the Government and People of Haiti as they seek to overcome the challenges they face and build a country of which all its citizens can be proud.”
Haiti lost President Jovenel Moise to violence in August, shortly after which it was hit by an earthquake near the same area that shook in 2010, and shortly after that a tropical storm on top of the continuing protests surrounding Moise’s presidency and the COVID-19 pandemic.
In his statement as incoming Chairman of CARICOM, Prime Minister of Belize John Briceno stated, “Within our Caribbean Community, the situation in Haiti commands our attention. The precarious political, social, economic, and security situations present a formidable challenge. We will continue to reach out to all the stakeholders, as we seek to support all Haitians in arriving at a Haitian-led solution. This is the only way forward for peace and stability.”
