COVID continued to deprive most Belizeans of their entertainment pursuits, but toward the latter part of the year, there was a resurgence in football and cycling as the latter returned with a Top League Tournament won by Verdes FC.

Internationally, Belize was rocked on its arrival to Haiti for a World Cup qualification match in March by a hold-up by armed gangs on the way from the airport. Belize lost that match and only won once in its group as it missed continuing qualification for Qatar 2022.

However, cyclists won medals at the Caribbean regional cycling championship, as well as the Pok-ta-Pok (Maya pelota) championship. Belize also made international bows in cricket and rugby sevens at regional tournaments.

Destiny Wagner surprised everyone in November by capturing the title of Miss Earth 2021, Belize’s first major international pageantry title, outlasting 79 other entrants. Miss World Belize Markeisha Young must wait until March of 2022 for her chance after COVID interrupted that pageant’s holding in Puerto Rico in December.

Also in the world of music, fіvе оf Веlіzе’ѕ mоѕt рrоmіnеnt muѕісіаnѕ асrоѕѕ gеnrеѕ were ѕіgnеd uр tо thе Unіvеrѕаl Мuѕіс Grоuр, “thе bіggеѕt rесоrd соmраnу іn thе wоrld.”

Toward the end of the year, a number of celebrities began to visit Belize, producing instances of good and bad. It started with the private vacation of singer Britney Spears, marred by a public social media post complaining that her trip to Gladden Resort was not what she had been led to expect. James Prince, record executive, hit back and restored some of Belize’s luster; he also later recruited the mercurial Kanye West to visit at the end of the year. From the world of American football, past star Ed Reed made a highly publicized visit in early December reaching out to youths at the Central Prison and in the Lake Independence area, while current talent Russell Wilson briefly touched down between games of a busy NFL season.
