VIII. Obituaries

Prominent deaths covered in this space include tourism pioneer Gordon “Butch” Stewart in January; founder of the Belize Zoo, Sharon Matola, in March; Superintendent of Police Henry Jemmott in May; former Benque Viejo librarian Judith Gonzalez; social scientist Nicole Haylock; BDF Private Jesse Escobar; former aide-de-camp to the Governor-General, Major Eric Neal, and many others. After a long and fruitful life dedicated to preserving Kriol culture, Myrna Manzanares died earlier in December and was given her due at a funeral service on Wednesday. We say rest in peace to her and the others whose lives we have been privileged to cover in this space.

Each of them touched lives, whether many or few.

We would be remiss not to remember the hundreds lost to COVID-19 this year, named and unnamed, and the many more lost to violence and other diseases.

We ask that you take care of yourselves and those around you as we enter this new year.
