Brandon Cattouse wins the 31st Krem New Year’s Day Men’s Cycling Classic on Saturday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Brandon Cattouse riding for the 501 Valvoline Cycling Team won the 31st Krem New Year’s Day Men’s Cycling Classic on Saturday riding in hand in hand with his teammate Derrick Chavarria.

Chavarria was the first Under-23 rider in the race.

Chavarria got away from the front six in Ladyville by the Philip Goldson Airport Road, but his teammate Cattouse set chase and caught him just before Caribbean Tire on the Philip Goldson Highway. Thereafter, both rode together into Belize City. Just past the Belcan Bridge they held hands in the air with Cattouse riding in just ahead at the finish line across from the Belize City Center.

Cattouse, G-Flow Cayo Cargo’s Jyven Gonzalez, and Westrac Alliance Cycling Club’s Angel Tzib and Eric Trapp (Heusner) attacked early in the race after they left the Corozal Free Zone area in their 96-mile ride to Belize City. Chavarria and FAL Cyclin Team’s Sherwin Roca bridged the gap by Mile 45.

Gonzalez was third a few yards behind the front two. Roca rode in fourth. Trapp was fifth and Tzib finished sixth.

G-Flow’s Giovanni Lovell won the peloton sprint to finish seventh.

This was Cattouse’s first big classic. He had already finished second and fourth before.

“I was waiting for it a long time,” said Cattouse to Krem TV and Radio. “The early breaks are always a good move to make.”

He said that in their team meeting it was agreed to attack early.

“When we saw the breakaway rider gone, we were skeptical because they were four minutes ahead. I was cramping, but my teammate Brandon Cattouse gave me a hand,” Chavarria said, adding that he and Brandon agreed on who was going to ride in first once they got away at the end.

“He and I had already settled, then the team decided, but we had already decided on that,” said Chavarria.

“I went early, and those guys couldn’t make it across,” said Cattouse. “I think I have to put a bit more pressure on myself, but you have to be a team player. Derrick went ahead and then waited on me and he said, ‘Today da fu yu’.”

“Today I got an easy ride and I had it at the end,” said Cattouse.

Cattouse praised his younger teammate, Derrick Chavarria.

“It shows that he will be a great rider because he could have won today but he said Brandy, this that fu yu.”

Chavarria had a great 2021 winning the gold in Caribbean Junior Road Cycling Championship and the Belize Youth National Road Championship.
