By Aaron Humes: Valley of Peace Farms Limited is at this hour fighting a fire reportedly deliberately set this morning.
Owner Gilly Canton Jr. told us via telephone the size of the property burnt is 1,208 acres containing sugar cane valued at approximately 2.25 million.
Canton declined to speculate on the cause of the fire other than to say he believed it was deliberately set.
He noted that witnesses have provided descriptions of the three suspects seen in the area, which will be provided to police for their investigations.
Canton estimates that if the Santander Sugar mill, which we understand was not scheduled to begin operations as yet, is immediately put into operation, he will be able to save a small portion of the burnt cane, but otherwise, it is a near-total loss.
