By Rubén Morales Iglesias: C-Ray’s Gabrielle Gabourel on Saturday won the 31st Krem New Year’s Day Women’s Cycling Classic on Saturday.

Gabourel crossed the finish line on Central American Boulevard in Belize City just ahead of teammate Kaya Cattouse who lifted her hands in celebration of her younger teammate’s strong ride from Orange Walk to Belize City.

“Me and Kaya were hoping we could get away and come in together,” Gabourel said.

Gabourel attacked at the very start of the race, but later Kaya went ahead leaving Gabourel with Paulita Chavarria of Chavarria/Western Spirits Cycling Team, the only other rider in the 52-mile Women’s race.

Gabourel was able to catch up with Kaya afterward and both rode together to Belize City even passing a number of the Men’s Junior/Youth riders.

“I think you guys are not giving Gabby the credit. She’s just 16. I want you all to give Gabby a round of applause because she is the first-ever 16-year-old to win this race,” Kaya said after the race on Krem TV and Radio.

Kaya said that Gabourel had to do hard work to maintain the pace during the race against a strong headwind and to keep up with her. She said that Gabourel’s winning as a 16-year-old will be a record that will be very hard to beat.
