By Benjamin Flowers: The United Kingdom-based media house, The Independent, reports that health authorities in Israel have confirmed that a patient has been diagnosed with a combination infection of COVID-19 and influenza which they are calling “Florona.”

The case was reportedly detected three days ago in an unvaccinated patient that had recently given birth. While the patient presented mild symptoms, health authorities in Israel are said to be investigating the possibility of the double infection causing more severe symptoms.

While there have been several variants of COVID-19, the news marks the first announcement of influenza and COVID-19 pathogens co-existing simultaneously in the same patient.

Israel’s Health Ministry has also approved a fourth booster shot for people with compromised immune systems, as reports of COVID-19 omicron variant cases continue to pour in.

The Ministry’s data shows as many as 5,000 new cases reported on Friday, December 31.
