Sugar crop to restart on time after internal equipment issue addressed

Posted: Sunday, January 2, 2022. 7:41 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) this evening has clarified that the Tower Hill mill is ready to receive sugar cane starting at 10 a.m. Monday.

We were shown a notice that stated a key piece of equipment in the mill had suffered a failure.

However, BSI has since indicated that the equipment is being repaired and after further tests, the mill will be ready on time.

All four major sugar cane organizations are expected to deliver cane again after the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) last week signed an interim agreement with BSI/ASR to deliver while negotiating a new commercial agreement. The original agreement expires later this month.

Also, the three other associations, the Progressive, Northern, and Corozal associations, will resume deliveries after the start of crop last week was marred by a fight within the CSCPA that spilled onto the grounds of Tower Hill.
