Cattouse-Gabourel families rake Krem’s New Year’s Day races in ‘A Tribute to King Catt’

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Cattouse-Gabourel families raked the Krem’s New Year’s Day races in what Kaya Cattouse, Belize’s most celebrated cyclist, calls a “A Tribute to King Catt”.

Goran and Gabrielle Cattouse have grown with cycling in their veins under the tutelage of Ray Cattouse and his children Brandon, Kaya, Riis, and Yan Cattouse. And let’s not forget that their uncle Ian Smith was also one of Belize’s top cyclists in his day.

And they are coming of age excellently.

Last year, both Goran and Gabrielle, children of Ray Cattouse’s sister-in-law Pamela Smith and Freddy Gabourel, represented Belize at the Junior Cycling Championships in the Dominican Republic where Gabrielle won the bronze medal in the Individual Time Trial.

On Saturday, both, along with Brandon and Kaya, raked the top spots in the Krem’s New Year Day Cycling Classic. All rode for the C-Ray Cycling Team, except for Brandon, who has moved over to 501 Valvoline Cycling Team.

Brandon won the overall 96-mile race from the Mexico-Belize Border to Belize City in 4 hours, 19 minutes, and 44 seconds. In passing, he also picked up the Masters’ honours.

Gabrielle won the Women’s Elite Category and automatically the Junior Category. She was accompanied by Kaya in second position, both clocking 3:04:58 for the 52-mile race from Orange Walk to Belize City.

Goran captured the top spot in the Men’s Junior Race from Orange Walk to Belize City in 3:02:18.

It certainly was a momentous occasion for Ray Catt.
