Rural transformation occurring in remote Mabil Ha in Toledo – resident Frederico Cajbom says he is pleased

By BBN Staff: Like the many kinds of people in Belize, the obstacles we encounter in different parts of Belize are unique to our environment and community. When some are dreading the early morning commute in the city, Frederico Cajbom and many people in the rural communities have a different experience and journey ahead of them in order to complete their day.

Frederico’s desires are what we might call ‘the bare necessities in life’ yet to his family and communities like his, it means so much more. Growing up, Frederico’s family raised chickens, pigs, and other animals while also planting corn, pepitos, and beans in order to earn an income and provide an education for their children. He remembers the trek to their land requiring them to walk through mud and bush in order to plant, grow and harvest their produce.

For his family and those in the rural communities, having improved access to roads means access to basic necessities like the tools needed to work the land, safe and clean drinking water, quality healthcare, and education. It makes transporting their harvest from their farm back to their houses and then to our tables much easier.

Within the past few months, Frederico has seen significant changes in different communities in the Toledo district, including his own community of Mabil Ha, of the Ministry of Rural Transportation.

“Thanks to the prompt response and assistance given to our communities from the Ministry of Rural Transportation, they have made my dream a reality by improving the water systems such as the well here in Mabil Ha, building farmers roads, and working with other ministries to make agriculture, food security, healthcare and education a possibility for me, my brothers and sisters, our future generations and our people”, said Frederico in an interview about the changes being made in rural Toledo.
